Copper (II) Chloride and Iron Lab day 2

WOW!!!! Over night the reaction went wild!! There was this creepy weird orange stuff that looked like coral or something that you would find in the ocean on a reef! It grew on the nail!!! It looked pretty disgusting in all honesty! All of that stuff that grew on the nail was the copper! We had to take forceps to grip the nail and take water to get that product off the nail. Now the tedious part came! We had to siphon (suck up all the liquid) the solution the copper was in making sure to not suck up any product off. Then we had to add 25mL of HCl and siphon that off too. Then we had to add 25mL of water and siphon that off as well. The part that I probably scared me the most was worrying about if I sucked up any product! I wanted to make sure our results were as pure as they could get! So siphoning off three times made me feel like I was some surgeon operating on a heart! Now we just have to wait and let it dry!

Here are some pictures of the lab on day 2 below!

  1. You took a lot of pictures, the different stages are very easy to see using your blog. What I still don't understand is what this lab had to do with our current lesson?

  2. Your pictures are awesome! They are really close up so you can see how much the copper looked like poop; also, this lab was cool because the copper (II) chloride changed so drastically. Sometimes when we do these practice problems, I can't imagine it happening in real life, and this lab really showed that these chemical reactions are real and really cool!

  3. Your pictures are so cool! I'm sure it's really helpful to anyone who missed the lab or needed to look at it again while doing the problems afterwards. These labs definitely help me see the real world application of the unit.

  4. Wow! You're pictures look so cool! I felt like in this lab we just kept siphoning, and siphoning, and siphoning! To me that was the best part because I like the labs that consist of small, tedious steps so that yu can just watch the experimwnt happen slowly.

  5. I think this was a good lab in that it went over the concepts of the unit, but it was also somewhat irrelevant because it was more repetitive. It did exactly what we had already done, and more, and more. Thus, I think it was somewhat unproductive, but also a bit helpful.

  6. You are an awesome photographer! I really liked the way you showed all parts off the lab with those pictures because it made it easy to tell exactly what went on in the lab.

  7. You're pictures look awesome! I thought that the lab actually proved helpful since it provided a little more practice come time for the test, and I would be glad to do more labs like it in the future. Although I do agree it was a bit repetitive, I had fun doing it, so I'd love to see more like it!
